Caring for Birds in Winter

You can provide a healthy refuge for birds during the cold, winter months. According to Audobon.org, more than a hundred bird species supplement their natural diets with foods offered at feeders and they often rely most heavily on feeders in winter, when other food is scarce.
There are five main types of bird feeders and your choice depends on which type of bird you’re trying to attract and support over the winter months. Pleasant Hill Pet & Livestock sells all these types. Shopping for bird feeders is fun, too, with a wide variety of prices. Stop by our store and take a look. If you have any questions, we’ll be right there to help.
Tube Feeders. These are the most all-around type of feeders that you’ll hang from posts (to avoid squirrels).
Hopper Feeders. These feeders are also placed on posts but are designed to open when a bird lands on it to release the seeds.
Suet Feeders. Suet feeders look like little cages dangling from a sturdy cord or pole. Woodpeckers and chickadees love suet!
Thistle Feeders. Designed for small-beaked finches, you’ll pack these with nyjer (thistle) seeds and hang them from a tree or prop on a pole.
Ground Feeders. These feeders are placed closer to the ground and usually come with a wire mesh to keep on squirrels and crows. You’ll want to put these away from trees or shrubs to keep your bird friends safe from predators.
Not sure what kind of bird feeder you should be using? How To Choose The Right Kind Of Bird Feeder
Birds will need high fat options to give them additional energy to stay warm. Blackoil sunflower is a very popular diet. Pleasant Hill Pet & Livestock has a wide variety of bird seed blends, including our custom bird seed mixes that have nuts, seeds and oils that appeal to a variety of birds. Do you prefer a specialty blend? No problem! We mix these up as well!
We also sell suet cakes and mixes to keep activity at your bird feeders all winter long.
Looking for a premium blend of bird food that all the birds will love? Bird Bonanza is our specially formulated mix for a variety of birds. It contains sunflower seeds, sunflower hearts, and raw shelled peanuts for Blue Jays, Wrens, and Blue Birds; safflower seeds for Cardinals, Chickadees, and Woodpeckers; and white millet for Sparrows, Doves, Towhees, and Juncos.
This year-round custom blend will help your feathered friends celebrate their good fortune for coming to your feeder!
Did you know that not all finches migrate in the winter? There are a number of finch species in North America that still hang around over winter, especially if they have a good, reliable source of food. If you enjoy feeding finches or other small birds, our Finch Frenzy is the perfect mix. It’s a blend of equal amounts of fine sunflower chips and Nyjer thistle seeds, specially prepared for your small-beaked finches.
Cardinals are year-round birds, and their bright red plumage is a welcome sight against the white and gray of winter. When the temps get frigid, it’s especially important that you provide the nutritious food they need to help them survive.
Our Cardinal Craze is perfect for your Cardinals and other large birds. Packed with a three-ingredient blend that cardinals love most: Black Oil Sunflower seeds, sunflower hearts, and safflower seeds.
